The birth right is not just your salvation but it is what would define you, your life, your legacy. If you missed it, you would be significantly less than what God intended for you to be.
Why did Esau sell his birth right:
A. He despised it. He ‘sold his birth right’ because it meant so little to him. He was a worldly person. He despised what was spiritual. What could not be seen was not valuable to him. He looked at present benefits not the idealistic future.
Note the implication. What he lost had never been his in any genuine way, for he had always despised it in his heart. It meant nothing to him, and he had casually exchanged it for a dish of soup.
There is only one price for a birth right, a morsel of food. Whether you sell it for a husband, a child, a visa, a degree, a job it all equates to one morsel of food. There are no higher figures, there are no better bargains. Whatever is in the other hand when you give away a birth right, is a morsel of food. It is like selling eternity for time.
B. He was profane.
Esau was a profane man, not because he sold his birth right; but he sold his birth right because he was profane.
Notice the bible speaks of a root of bitterness. The root is below ground--unseen. The surface of the field, maybe bear, smooth or even covered with concrete on top. But underneath are roots that remain alive almost indefinitely.
C. He believed a lie. "And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birth right do to me?” I cannot handle this...
What makes a tree produce oranges and another mangoes is not the air or sun or water or even the soil. What makes the difference is the root of the tree. Everything depends on the nature of the root that is imbedded in the soil. The fruit takes its character from the roots; not the air, water, soil or sun. The bible describes believers as the planting of the Lord. It is possible Esau was not the only hungry person in Isaac's house that afternoon.
1 Corinthians 10:13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Hebrews 4:15
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Another hungry man or woman would have walked passed by that bowl of soup. Not exchange his birth right for
D. He never considered the “afterwards"
There is always the “afterwards”. "For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.” (12:17)
Every time you are tempted to exchange your birth right please remember the afterwards. Any major decision must be made in light of afterwards. Everything has a price tag.
After you enjoy it you realize it was only "one"....transitory, brief, not worth it. It could swallowed in one moment, one bite and forgotten. It is not a constant feast.
The way you handle your birth right will be the description of your life in a summary.
This action summed up his life and character.
